It was a lovely ceremony,â Jessie said as she embraced Steph. âI was really moved.â
âAs were Paddy and I,â Margaret Callahan chimed in as she joined them.
âMarg,â Steph exclaimed, and the women hugged like the old friends they were. âIâm so glad you made it.â
Jessie repeated the name in her head. Marg. She didnât think sheâd ever heard that variation on Margaret. Not in real life, anyway. With her short blonde haircut and long, elegant neck, Marg Callahan seemed like perfect casting for the role of Dannyâs mother.
âMy three favorite women in one spot,â Danny declared as he moved between Jessie and his mother and placed his arms around their shoulders. âSteph Neff, ladies and gentlemen.â
Jessie giggled.
âI told you Iâm keeping my name, loser.â
âAh, but I was hoping youâd change your mind. I can get a lot of mileage out of Steph Neff jokes.â
âBehave yourself,â Marg reprimanded him.
âYes, listen to your mother,â Steph teased. âGo do what you do bestââ
âClass up the joint?â
ââand fetch your mother and your date a little sustenance.â
Danny chuckled. Leaning toward Jessie, he asked, âJoin me?â
âLove to.â
âMom?â
âNo, your father is inside putting something together for us.â
âLetâs check it out.â He took Jessieâs hand, and the two of them crossed the threshold into the house.
The living room furniture had been removed and replaced with white leather couches and matching oversized chairs on one side of the massive stone fireplace; on the other side, several food tables with uniformed attendants. A beautiful white, three-tiered wedding cake topped with a crystal monogram and trimmed with sugar versions of the flowers of the dayâlavender roses and green hydrangeaâoccupied a round table as the centerpiece of the room.
Danny took the open spot next to his father at the carving station. âJessie, have you met the old man?â
They exchanged matching smiles, and Patrick Callahanâs blue eyes sparkled. âWatch who you call old, son.â
âWe met outside, yes. The ceremony was beautiful, wasnât it, Mr. Callahan?â
âIt was indeed.â He nodded at the attendant and said, âWell done, please.â Turning to Danny, he added, âYou know your mother. If thereâs a speck of pink on her prime rib, she wonât eat it.â
âIn recent years, my mother has become an epic fail of a vegan,â Danny told her. âShe loves animals of all kinds, and she really doesnât want to eat them. But prime rib is her downfall, so if the life is cooked out of it . . .â
âI get that,â Jessie joked. With a grin to Dannyâs father, she added, âI suppose Iâm a vegan at heart myself. My grandfather used to go crabbing with nets, and then heâd make a big crab dinner out of the little guys Iâd already named and wanted to keep for pets. It became a sort of traditionâeveryone else at the table had boiled crab, and I had a big plate of macaroni and cheese. Unfortunately, over the years, Iâve become much less successful at living out my childhood esteem for anything with a face.â
Danny laughed. âA recovering carnivore is what Mom calls it.
